Storm Gerrit Leaves Thousands Without Power as the Cleanup Efforts Begin

Following the havoc wreaked by Storm Gerrit, several homes across Scotland and Wales continue to grapple with power outages as the cleanup and restoration efforts commence.

In Scotland, approximately 1,500 homes endured a second night without electricity, primarily in the north-eastern regions and Shetland.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks reported that over 46,000 affected properties have had power reinstated since the storm hit, aiming to reconnect the remaining households by Friday.

Welfare vans are set to provide essential amenities like hot meals and beverages starting at 9 am to assist those impacted.

Expressing gratitude for the affected communities' patience, Operations Director Andy Smith acknowledged the challenging circumstances while lauding the tireless efforts of their teams striving to restore power.

Meanwhile, National Grid UK highlighted that 36,000 properties in Ceredigion, Wales, were without power due to lightning strikes on Thursday.

Tragically, North Yorkshire Police confirmed three fatalities after a vehicle submerged in the River Esk near Glaisdale during the storm.

The adverse weather, including a supercell thunderstorm over northwest England, compounded the situation, suspected to have caused a tornado damaging homes in Greater Manchester on Wednesday.
