This Weekend see's the start of LEZ zones within the city
Edinburgh’s ‘Low Emission Zone’ or ‘LEZ’ comes into force this Saturday - it’s going to be operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Non-Compliant cars will be charged £60 if they are driven through the LEZ. If it’s paid within 30 days, it’s reduced by half.
The scheme is similar to one in parts of London, which have been highly controversial with vigilantes defacing the cameras.
Unlike London’s scheme there isn’t a daily charge for non-compliant vehicles. Instead there are a series of escalating fines to try and only allow compliant cars into the capitals most central roads to reduce pollution.
The City of Edinburgh Council say it’ll be clearly signposted at entry and exit points, and cars will be recorded using Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
