Donald Trump pleads not guilty to election overthrow plot

Former US president Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to federal conspiracy charges in a plot to overturn the 2020 election.

The former president arrived at the courthouse in Washington DC to surrender to authorities after it's alleged he plotted to overturn his 2020 defeat.

The current frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nominee will appear before a magistrate judge on charges that include conspiracy to defraud the United States.

It is the third criminal case filed against Donald Trump this year, but the first to try to hold him criminally responsible for his efforts to cling to power in the weeks between his election loss and the Capitol attack.
