Findings from a recent study conducted by the Commission on School Reform have revealed that nearly one-third of students in the UK are missing an average of one day of school every two weeks.
This equates to 32% of pupils, totaling 210,672 students, who had an attendance rate of less than 90% during the 2022/23 school year, indicative of an "alarming trend" in school absence.
Most concerning is the observation that this problem worsens as students get older, highlighting a significant challenge in ensuring consistent attendance throughout a student's academic journey.
The study also suggests that school absence rates have seen an increase since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
This alarming situation has prompted concerns from education experts, who stress the critical importance of addressing this issue.
Keir Bloomer, chairman of the Commission on School Reform, emphasized that children missing a substantial portion of school time face barriers in their academic progress, relationships, and overall family and classroom environments.
It is an issue of "national importance" that warrants immediate attention and action.
