In her message, she revealed that the couple has been "separated for some time now."
Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister of Scotland, has announced her separation from her husband, Peter Murrell, via an Instagram post.
Sturgeon and Murrell first met through the Scottish National Party (SNP) in 1988 and began their relationship in 2003.
They married in July 2010 at Oran Mor in Glasgow. In her statement, Sturgeon expressed her sadness, writing, "With a heavy heart I am confirming that Peter and I have decided to end our marriage.
“To all intents and purposes we have been separated for some time now, and we feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are."
She emphasised that, despite the separation, they continue to care for each other deeply and requested privacy, stating, "We will be making no further comment."
The couple, who did not have children, faced personal challenges, including a miscarriage Sturgeon experienced in 2011.
Sturgeon stepped down unexpectedly as Scotland's First Minister and SNP leader in February 2023, having succeeded Alex Salmond after the 2014 independence referendum.
Following her resignation, Murrell, who had served as the SNP's chief executive since 1999, resigned the next month.
