Eastenders have revealed a new storyline that involves Alfie Moon being diagnosed with prostate cancer in order to bring awareness to the disease.

Eastenders writers will be working with Macmillan Cancer charity to create an "authentic story" in hopes to "open up vital conversations" about prostate cancer and one in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, says Prostate Cancer UK.

The BBC has said the story around Alfie's diagnosis will follow his story as he comes to terms with this illness and will involve Prostate Cancer UK, Macmillan Cancer Support and many other experts to create an authentic plot that shows first-hand how a man would experience the diagnosis both mentally and physically.

Executive producer, Chris Clenshaw has said he hopes are: "to accurately portray such an emotional and pivotal storyline for Alfie, and one that many viewers relate to".

Hopes for the producers is that the storyline can be told accurately and respectfully to raise awareness.

Macmillan Cancer Supports Dany Bell has said: "We hope that seeing a character like Alfie go through this experience will help open up these vital conversations and highlight the array of support that's out there."

Shane Richie, 59 who plays the loveable character of Alfie Moon on Eastenders was first seen in 2002 and has returned to Albert Square since he left in 2019 and has been involved in many emotional storylines including cot death, dementia and infidelity.
