Strike risk in Edinburgh schools unless they get pay rise

Strike threat looms for UNISON Edinburgh school staff if they're not offered a pay increase before the autumn.

Vital school staff are planning to go on strike across Scotland in the autumn unless a pay deal can be struck before then.

Workers including cleaners, maintenance and support staff represented by the union UNISON have voted to strike in 24 out of Scotland's 32 council regions.

It is the largest-ever ballot for strike action by school staff in Scotland.

The union said there was an “overwhelming vote in favour of strike action in every council” but a 50% turnout had to be met, which is why some areas won't be striking.

Unison balloted staff working in schools for councils in Scotland over the 5% pay offer from the employer body.
