Scotland alcohol advertising ban has ‘no robust evidence’ to support

A report has insisted that in Scotland, there is “no robust evidence” in favour of banning alcohol advertising.

The Institute for Economic Affairs released its paper following announcements from The First Minister that he would be going “back to the drawing board” after outrage from the alcohol industry over previous proposals to ban advertising alcoholic drinks in Scotland

The Scottish Government had been consulting on plans which would have barred drinks firms from sponsoring sport and live events, and banned alcohol companies from selling merchandise.

Humza Yousaf wants “to reduce the harm caused by alcohol to children”, but accepted the proposals had caused “real concern”.

Yousaf claims to have instructed Scottish Government staff to “work with the industry, and crucially with public health stakeholders” in the hope the proposals will have better outcomes for all.
