Aldi secured its position as the most economical supermarket throughout 2023, beating out rival Lidl, according to the consumer group Which?
The study revealed Aldi's dominance for 11 months, with Lidl edging past Aldi only in October.
In December, a basket of 43 essential groceries was priced at £74.83 in Aldi, slightly cheaper than Lidl, where it tallied £76.74. Waitrose, on the other hand, emerged as the priciest, costing nearly £20 more than Aldi at £94.94, retaining its title as the most expensive store consistently throughout the year.
The analysis also compared larger trolleys, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to varied product availability. Asda claimed the spot for the most budget-friendly option for 11 months, while Waitrose topped the charts as the costliest.

The study emphasized the ongoing challenge of food prices impacting household budgets and suggested supermarkets expand budget-range healthy food options, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Aldi's Managing Director of Buying, Julie Ashfield, expressed delight at the acknowledgment, emphasizing their commitment to providing quality at affordable prices. In contrast, Waitrose emphasized their investment of £100 million in price reductions without compromising quality or ethical standards.
