The Edinburgh Short Film Festival (ESFF) begins today, hosting talent from around the globe for this 16-day event.

Established in 2011, festival has become a premier platform for showcasing both local and international short films.

Originating from the Leith Short Film Festival, ESFF has exhibited an impressive array of works, including the first film produced in Somalia in two decades, Oscar-nominated shorts from Australia, the USA, and Ireland, as well as poignant films smuggled from China and Iran.

Over the years, the festival has welcomed filmmakers from across the globe, including talents from China, Russia, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands.

This year’s festival showcases award-winning shorts from renowned international festivals, including Venice and Sundance, alongside the best Scottish and UK films of 2024.

ESFF is known for its engaging Q&A sessions, along with unique screening events—such as showing films at pancake kiosks and hosting themed nights, including an evening of Shetlandic shorts with visiting Viking warriors.

In addition to its vibrant local events, the festival has taken its best short films on international tours, showcasing them at renowned film festivals worldwide, including the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival and Tokyo’s Short Shorts Film Festival.

With its diverse programming and dynamic approach, the ESFF continues to celebrate the art of short film and foster a global community of filmmakers and audiences.
