The female actress says it is "so important" to have shown blood in the second series of the BBC Prison Drama, Time.
In an upcoming episode of the prison drama "Time," British actress Jodie Whittaker, best known for her role as the Thirteenth Doctor in "Doctor Who," has voiced the significance of showcasing menstrual blood on screen.
Whittaker, who plays the character Orla in the series, sheds light on the harsh realities faced by female inmates without access to sanitary products.
"This is my favorite scene I've ever shot," Whittaker expressed in an interview with Radio Times, referring to the pivotal moment in the second series of the Bafta-winning BBC show set inside a women's prison.
She emphasized the importance of representing the unvarnished truth of life behind bars.
Whittaker explained, "Showing the blood was so important. It's brilliant because it tells you what comes for free in prison, what doesn't, and what's a commodity. Dehumanisation is absolutely in the fabric of the system."
The series, created by Jimmy McGovern, commences with the arrival of three new inmates at Carlingford Prison. Whittaker's Orla, alongside characters Kelsey and Abi, portrayed by Bella Ramsey and Tamara Lawrance, explores the challenges and stark realities faced by incarcerated women.
"Time" promises a thought-provoking and uncompromising portrayal of life within the prison system, addressing critical issues like menstrual hygiene, and more.
