Organisers have announced that Edinburgh International Festival will return this year.

The popular event is set to take place in the Capital from the 7th-29th of August but will be ‘reimagined’ due to the pandemic.

The festivals will be held outside in marquees at Edinburgh Park and Edinburgh University’s Old College Quad. The above photo is the old College Quad and what the performance venue could look like.

Shows will also be shorter with no intervals. As well as being able to see the shows live, some performances will be streamed online for free throughout the week of the festival.

Festival director Fergus Linehan stated: “It may not look like the usual festival and obviously there’s still an awful lot to be looked and decided upon, both for ourselves and for our sister festivals such as the Fringe and various others, but we’re feeling confident at the moment that we will be able to have a meaningful live offering this August.”

Mr Linehan added: “It’s an opportunity for the public to get back to live performances, but also an incredible opportunity for artists and freelance workers, for who the festivals are such an important part, to begin to get the wheels moving again.”

Full details of the 2021 programme will be announced on Wednesday, the 2nd of June.
